As world leaders gather for the United Nations General Assembly, Caritas Internationalis and Caritas Middle East and North Africa (MONA) have issued a joint appeal calling for an immediate end to the suffering in the region. According to a report published by ReliefWeb, the humanitarian organizations are urging United Nations member states and the wider international community to take more decisive and forceful action to address the multi-layered crisis currently affecting the Middle East.
The organizations warned that global leaders cannot afford to stand by with their arms crossed while the civilian population continues to pay the heavy price of war, displacement, and widespread destruction. According to Caritas, civilians across the region are being systematically deprived of the most basic conditions necessary to live a dignified life.
Widespread Violations of International Law
The joint statement from Caritas highlighted that populations across Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran are facing severe hardships on a daily basis. These populations are enduring the brutality of daily bombardments, confinement, and a lack of basic freedoms and essential goods. Furthermore, Caritas noted that forced displacements continue without control, which they described as a flagrant violation of international law and international norms.
The Critical Situation in Gaza
In Gaza, the humanitarian situation remains exceptionally critical, according to the report. Caritas pointed out that despite a ceasefire being announced on October 10, 2025, Israeli forces have violated this agreement every single day. These daily violations have persisted for 337 consecutive days, up to September 14, 2026.
According to data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) cited by Caritas, the majority of Gaza's residents remain displaced. The OCHA reports indicate that these displaced individuals are currently confined to approximately 30 percent of the total territory of the Gaza Strip, severely limiting their access to safety and essential resources.
A Call for Decisive Action
In light of these ongoing challenges, Caritas Internationalis and Caritas MONA have reiterated their call for the international community to intervene. They emphasize that the level of suffering endured by civilians in Gaza and the broader region requires an urgent and robust response from global leaders meeting at the UN General Assembly. The organizations stress that the ongoing deprivation of basic necessities and the continuous displacement of families must be addressed immediately to prevent further loss of life and dignity.
